'In my previous post, I discussed the cause and effect of hiring better sales people and generating sales growth. I took a dive into the first step of correcting that recruiting problem by creating a profile that attracts more of the right people. This next part will deal with finding those people. In today''s world, communicating nearly everything is done online.
'You want a killer way to know if you’re talking to an “A” player during an interview? There is one thing that the best of the best sales people do during an interview that others don’t. They ask the questions that matter. Let’s stop and think about it for a minute. What is an interview? An interview is a way for an employer to evaluate the ability of a candidate to do a job.
'We’ve all been there. Prospects say they will buy or they want your service or they will call you back and they don’t. They just disappear, in spite of their promises. Ray is a sales person with a client and he was struggling with this very challenge. I asked him to share his experience with this community, because his story is solid. You’re going to enjoy this.

'Deals get stuck for one reason and one reason only. Someone doesn’t believe what your selling is worth the effort, time or money at the moment. Deals get stuck because they lack urgency. Yes, your product or service solves a problem. It may make your customer’s world easier. It may help them launch a new product, reduce profits, minimize waste or whatever, but regardless of all that the buyer or someone else just doesn’t think that’s enough.
'Last week I bought a new dining set for my home in the mountains. Because I’m not there often, I didn’t schedule a delivery date. I wasn’t sure when I was going to be up there to take delivery. The salesman told me that wasn’t a problem and to just call at least two days in advance to schedule the delivery. Well, I’m going this weekend, so I called them on Wed.

'We have been given a gift today. We’ve been given a free hour, an hour we can do anything we want. In a society where we are all squeezed for time, struggling to make due with the minutes we have, today is the ultimate gift, it’s a 25 hour day. You have an extra 60 minutes today, one whole hour. What are you going to do with it? You can sleep an extra hour like most do or you could be deliberate in using it.
'Marissa Mayer impressed the f**k out of me at Dreamforce today. She was the afternoon keynote. It was called a keynote, but it was more of an interview with Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com’s CEO. I would have preferred Benioff sat on the sidelines for this one and let Marissa control the stage. Inspite of the format, Marissa nailed it, “it” being leadership and running a company.
'Your existing customer base is gold, right? We’ve all heard it before, the cost of acquiring a new customer far out weighs keeping an existing one. This is even more true in the SaaS world. More and more companies are rolling out SaaS business models. It just makes sense. Why? Companies don’t want to manage expensive hardware infrastructures, deal with complicated software rollouts, upgrades and more.
'The other day I was listening to a RadioLab podcast called Cut and Run. It was a RadioLab short. I love RadioLab. You can listen the the podcast here. This particular show tried to answer the question why Kenyan long distance runners are so much better than everyone else? I’ve always known that Kenyan’s are really good at long distance, but what I didn’t know is that it’s not all Kenyan’s.

'I loved this short but quick hitting video. Most content surrounding success today addresses what happens when you get there. There is little info about what happens when success is actually achieved. I think that’s because so few of us reach the success we want. The less successful is a bigger market. Smaller market or not, once we achieve the success we’re looking for staying there takes just as much work.
'I’m currently reading How Children Succeed by Paul Tough. If you have young kids, it’s a must read. How Children Succeed challenges the notion that cognitive abilities and test scores are the key to success and postulates that it’s actually grit, curiosity and character that makes our kids successful. . The book is filled with killer stories and research laying out what it takes to be successful in society, particularly in school and what the children who succeed are doing.
'It seems like every 4 or 5 months I get into a real funk when it comes to this blog. I get, what equates to writers block. I just can’t come up with any good topics to write about. I am a streaky writer. If you watch basketball you’ll know what I mean. There are some shooters in basketball who appear to be just lights out for awhile, but then can’t make a basket to save their life.
'While at Dreamforce last month, I attended a CEB session on insights and the challenger sale. I’ve read the book, I’ve worked with clients who are implementing it. There wasn’t anything new I learned, BUT it did remind me how important sales people are to an organization and how we make a huge difference in the success in our clients business.

Companies all over the world, including Marriot International and Hilton Worldwide, are aware of the value of including DEI in their talent acquisition strategy. 'I stumbled on this video on Storeboard.com. It’s a speech from Barbara Corcoran for the 2013 Entrepreneur Magazine ‘s 5th Annual Growth Conference. I almost didn’t watch this video. It showed up in my Twitter stream: What got me to watch was, it was Barbara. I love the Shark Tank and wanted to learn more about Barbara. I didn’t know anything about her.
